Barro Negro Openwork Mezcalero

Barro Negro Openwork Mezcalero Handmade in San Marcos Tlapazola, Oaxaca

This small spice/salt holder or mezcalero from San Marcos Tlapazola, Oaxaca, is shaped from locally sourced clay and baked in an underground wood fire of thick black smoke which gives them their special color. Its rich black color creates an intricate surface as its hand-carved openwork makes its charming and elegant pottery.

Made using generations-old techniques, each piece is formed without molds, dyes, or glazes. Food-safe and perfect for salt or spices in the kitchen or to have sips of mezcal, it’s a piece that brings tradition straight to your table.

  • Made of locally-sourced Barro Negro, or black clay.
  • No glaze or dyes are used, the clay acquires its black color from the special mud in Coyotepec and the smoke used when baked.
  • Handmade: Each piece is one of a kind as no molds or potter's wheels are used when making these special vases.
  • CARE: Barro Negro is baked at low temperatures and unglazed, which makes it prone to absorbing some odors. Not microwave or dishwasher safe. Only when extremely necessary hand wash and let it fully dry.
  • Sold individually.
  • Approximate Measurements: Diameter 2 ½’’ Height 1 ½’’ Hold 1.7 oz
